EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
