Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
