The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That
Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
